Mary M. Li, MD, PhD
Dr. Li is a board-certified medical oncologist for Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS) in Hernando County.
Often described as outgoing and always positive about life, she is devoted to her work as an oncologist, to patient care and to her family. Dr. Li maintains a keen focus on cutting-edge cancer treatments and remains steadfastly involved in clinical research. She is the author of numerous publications in neuropharmacology and has a special interest in DNA adducts and carcinogens.
After earning her doctorate in pharmacology, Dr. Li completed the internship and residency program in internal medicine at the University of Louisville, where she received recognition as best resident and chief resident in internal medicine, and as chief fellow in medical oncology. She is board-certified in medical oncology and internal medicine.
Dr. Li joined FCS in 2011. She serves on the FCS Executive Board and is a member of the Compliance Committee.
Ranked as a Top Oncologist by Consumers’ Research Council of America in 2010, Dr. Li was nominated by her patients as a candidate for the Lymphoma & Leukemia Society Woman of the Year in 2013. She is an active supporter and advocate for many cancer organizations, including the American Cancer Society. Dr. Li travels frequently on weekends to keep up with information on cutting-edge new treatments for her patients.
In her spare time, Dr. Li enjoys all kinds of outdoor activities and spending time with her family.

Louisa Potthast and her mother, Jan Ficarra, have a special bond that’s more unique than most. Both women are cancer survivors and receive care from Mary Li, MD, medical oncologist/hematologist at Florida Cancer Specialists and Research Institute. Jan is a four-time cancer survivor and has fought through cervical cancer, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer that spread to her colon–Her first diagnosis was when she was only 28 years old. Louisa was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer in June of 2021. Watching her mom fight cancer for most of her life has been inspirational in her own journey.
Dr. Li talks about how her grandfather’s battle with cancer inspired her to become an oncologist.
